Amalgam (Mercury) Filling Replacement

For patients who wish to replace older mercury-based fillings, we follow structured clinical protocols designed to support patient comfort and protect the surrounding tooth structure during the process.

Some patients choose to replace older amalgam (mercury-based) fillings for a range of personal, functional or aesthetic reasons.

Dr Ewan Jones has undertaken additional training in structured amalgam replacement protocols and is a member of the SMART (Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique) organisation.

When replacing amalgam fillings, the practice follows a structured clinical process designed to support patient comfort and minimise unnecessary particulate exposure during treatment. This may include the use of rubber dam isolation, high-volume suction, and other procedural measures appropriate to the individual case.

Replacement options may include:

  • Bonded composite restorations

  • Ceramic inlays or onlays

The decision to replace existing fillings is always individual and discussed as part of a comprehensive assessment, taking into account the condition of the tooth, existing restorations, and long-term treatment considerations.

What If I’m Unsure What I Need?

Many patients arrive unsure of what treatment is appropriate.

That is completely normal.

Treatment recommendations are always based on a comprehensive assessment. During your consultation, we explain findings clearly and outline options so you can make informed decisions without pressure.
