Why Preventative Care Matters to Me
By Ewan Jones
One of the things I’ve come to appreciate most in dentistry, especially after three decades of doing it, is the value of prevention. The consistent things. The small choices people make every day tend to have a big impact over time.
When I first started practising, most people came to the dentist because something had already gone wrong; a broken tooth, a painful infection or a filling that needed replacing. We would always do our best to help, but I could see how much could have been prevented with earlier care and regular maintenance.
It makes sense, we all live busy lives nowadays and it's easy to not think about something - especially health until it's causing problems! But when you make preemptive care a habit, it makes a lot of things easier and can prevent issues that could arise down the line.
At its core, preventative care is about staying ahead of problems. It’s about taking small, manageable steps to protect what’s already working well. That might mean a routine clean, a conversation about brushing technique, or simply identifying early signs of wear or inflammation before they become bigger issues.
Personally, I take it seriously in my own life. I see our hygienists every three to four months - just like I suggest my patients do. Not because something’s wrong, but because I want to keep everything in check. I pay attention to the little things: how I’m eating, whether I’m stressed, and how that might be impacting my health. These aren’t perfect habits, but the consistency keeps me connected to maintaining my health.
My approach at Melbourne Biomimetic Dental Centre is built around prevention. From the first phone call to regular hygiene visits, we take the time to understand the full picture, not just what’s going on today. Our hygienists play a huge role in this. They’re often the ones who spot things early, who keep people on track, and who help create that ongoing sense of trust and calm in the chair.
Biomimetic dentistry naturally aligns with a preventative mindset. It focuses on preserving as much healthy tooth structure as possible, and restoring only what truly needs support. By using techniques and materials that mimic the tooth’s natural function and design, we’re able to take a measured, considered approach to treatment, one that values longevity, clarity, and minimal intervention where appropriate.
Preventative care might not always feel urgent. But in my experience, it’s one of the most powerful tools we have. It allows people to stay in control of their health, to feel confident in their care, and to avoid the stress that comes with last-minute decisions.
