Why Culture Matters More Than Ever

By Ewan Jones

When people ask me what I'm most proud of after more than 35 years in dentistry, my answer is rarely a particular treatment or piece of technology.

It's the people.

Many of the team members at Melbourne Biomimetic Dental Centre have been with me for decades. We've shared countless patient stories, celebrated milestones together, navigated challenges, and watched families grow. Some of our patients first came to see us as children and now bring their own children through our doors.

That kind of longevity doesn't happen by accident.

Over the years, I've learned that the strongest teams aren't built around job titles or qualifications alone. They're built around shared values. A commitment to doing the right thing. A genuine desire to help people. The willingness to keep learning. A sense of responsibility for the people around you. And, just as importantly, a sense of humour.

Dentistry can be a serious profession, but that doesn't mean the workplace needs to feel serious all the time.

One of the things patients often comment on is the atmosphere within our practice. They notice the conversations, the laughter, the way the team works together.

I think that's because we've always tried to create an environment that is both professional and welcoming. We are dedicated to providing the highest quality care we can, but we also believe people should enjoy coming to work each day. A calm, supportive culture benefits everyone - our team, our patients, and ultimately the quality of care we provide.

As a practice, we've always been committed to continual improvement. Dentistry continues to evolve, and so do we. We invest heavily in education, new techniques, and better ways of caring for our patients because we genuinely enjoy what we do. Learning keeps us engaged, challenged, and passionate about our profession.

That mindset extends beyond dentistry itself.

I believe great workplaces give people the opportunity to grow, contribute ideas, and take ownership of their role. Once someone understands our values and our way of working, I encourage autonomy, problem-solving, and initiative. Some of the best ideas in our practice have come from team members who saw an opportunity to improve something and took the initiative to make it happen.

As Melbourne Biomimetic Dental Centre continues to grow, we're now looking to welcome new people into our team.

We're not simply looking for experience on a resume. We're looking for people who care deeply about helping others, who enjoy being part of a close-knit team, and who want to contribute to something meaningful.

If you're dedicated, conscientious, willing to learn, and passionate about providing exceptional patient care, we'd love to hear from you.

Because at the end of the day, great dentistry starts with great people.
