My Natural Approach to Dental Care
By Ewan Jones
After more than three decades in dentistry, I’ve come to realise that the most powerful tools we have aren’t always the most high-tech or complex. Often, they’re the simplest ones: time, observation, respect for the body’s natural design, and a thoughtful, preventive approach.
For me, a “natural” approach to dental care isn’t about trends. It’s about listening to what the tooth is telling us, and doing everything we can to preserve its structure and function for as long as possible. That’s where biomimetic dentistry comes in. It’s been a big part of how I practise for many years now.
Biomimetic dentistry is grounded in science, and inspired by nature. It’s an approach that respects the natural anatomy of the tooth and aims to protect what’s already working well. Rather than removing healthy tissue to make way for a larger restoration, I use materials and techniques that bond to and support what’s already there, reinforcing the tooth in a way that closely mimics its natural behaviour.
This approach aligns with how I’ve always preferred to practise: conservatively, thoughtfully, and with a strong focus on preserving the natural tooth whenever possible.
This mindset flows into everything I do, taking the time to look at the bigger picture, considering factors like diet, lifestyle, habits, and past treatments. It’s never just about the tooth in isolation. It’s about working together to understand what’s contributing to the problem and how we can help prevent further issues down the track.
I believe in working with the body, not against it. And while there are times when intervention is necessary, my goal is always to intervene in the most thoughtful and conservative way possible. That means carefully selecting the right materials, preserving healthy structure wherever I can, and treating each person with the kind of care and attention I’d want for myself or my family.
Dentistry isn’t just about fixing things, it’s about fostering health. And for me, a natural, biomimetic approach is how I honour that responsibility.
