Founder’s Story: Why I Practice Biomimetic Dentistry

By Ewan Jones,

I graduated from University of Melbourne in 1988 and started working as a dentist the following year. Like most dentists fresh out of uni, those early years were all about learning – taking everything I’d studied and figuring out how that applied in a real clinic, with real people.

My one of my first jobs was in a well-established practice in South Yarra. I was fortunate to work alongside some very skilled dentists, and I was introduced early on to techniques that weren’t widely taught at the time – particularly adhesive dentistry. That experience made a strong impression on me. It showed me there were ways to restore teeth that focused on preserving what was already working well, rather than starting over.

At the time, I didn’t have a name for this style of dentistry. It just felt like the right thing to do. As I kept learning and refining my approach, I came across the term biomimetic dentistry – meaning ‘to mimic nature’. The more I explored it, the more I saw how closely it aligned with the kind of care I’d always aimed to provide: conservative, thoughtful and focused on keeping the natural tooth as intact as possible.

Over the years, I’ve had the chance to attend international conferences and hands-on courses with some of the world’s leading biomimetic dentists – including Pascal Magne and Didier Dietschi. Their work has shaped and strengthened my understanding of what’s possible when you respect the natural design of the tooth. More than anything, their commitment to this philosophy has been a source of inspiration. It confirmed that the care I wanted to give my patients had a clear framework and community behind it.

In 2005, I opened my own clinic. A few years later, after attending one of Pascal’s conferences in Sydney, I renamed the practice Melbourne Biomimetic Dental Centre. It felt like the right way to describe what we do here – not a shift in direction, but a clearer expression of how we’ve always worked.

For me, dentistry has never just been about the technical side. It’s about trust, long-term relationships, and taking the time to understand each person’s needs. Biomimetic dentistry gives me a way to practise that feels right – to offer the kind of care I’d want for myself or my family.
